Hot diggity! No more getting up at 5:00 am, you can sleep as late as you want! You can linger over your morning coffee and newspaper and stay in your nightgown until noon! If it snows, you no longer have to scrape the ice off your car and slip and slide all the way to work! And best of all, you can draw your Social Security that you worked so hard for all these years! Well, let me tell you that retirement for some of us is not all as wonderful as it seems! I worked in a private practice for a dentist for the last 35 years. Actually, there were three I worked for during that time. I loved the job I had, the doctors and his staff. But there weren’t many benefits. No insurance, and not a very good savings plan. Then I had to retire early due to health problems. Now my husband and I live on a “fixed income” and have to watch our pennies. Some of you ladies were able to save a nice nest egg for your retirement, and I am so happy for you. Some of you were “stay at home Moms”, but that doesn’t mean you didn’t work! In fact, raising your children and taking care of your family is the hardest job of all, but it is also the most rewarding! I sure do miss my paycheck, I admit it. Now that I am free to travel, I can’t afford it! Social Security helps, but it’s a shame you have to work half your life so you can draw less than $1,000 a month! What’s wrong with that picture? Over all, there are good things and bad things about being retired. It all boils down to just another milestone on life’s journey. I don’t know about you, but I am thankful that I’m still here to live it!
